Your Career, Your Personal Brand

"Your brand is what other people say about you when you're not in the room." - Jeff Bezos.

My letter to you today concerns personal branding, a topic that has become increasingly crucial for career advancement. Recently, the Professional Women's Network Milan invited me to speak at the International Women on Boards program. My presentation focused on the mindset shifts professional women need to make to secure their first non-executive board position. While preparing for this, one insight stood out: personal branding isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a pressing challenge for many managers.

The higher a manager’s aspirations, the more critical it becomes to shape how they are perceived in the market actively. It is no longer just about what you think or say about yourself but how others perceive and talk about you based on your actions, communication, and presence. It emphasizes the importance of aligning your behaviour and reputation with the message you want to convey to the world.

And often, your otherwise perfect personal brand for who you are today becomes your biggest liability when aiming for different or higher leadership roles. A deeply rooted brand that reflects your current identity and achievements can unintentionally box you in, making it difficult for others to envision you in a role that demands a different set of skills, perspectives, and leadership qualities. This is especially true when your aspirations and past results suggest potential, but you haven’t yet cultivated the full mindset or proven track record required to confidently step into the new role.

This disconnect between where you are now and where you aim to be can create a gap that only intentional personal branding can bridge. By reshaping how you present yourself—emphasizing future-focused aspirations and showcasing your adaptability and readiness—you can align your brand with the leadership position you seek, opening doors that might otherwise remain closed.

1. Why Waiting Is a Mistake

I’ll never forget a conversation I had during a coaching session with a senior operational director. Let’s call him Andreas. He had spent over 15 years perfecting his craft—streamlining operations across several units, driving efficiency, and delivering results that consistently met or even exceeded expectations. Now, Andreas was ready for the next step: a Managing Director role. But despite his stellar track record, he wasn’t making it past the final rounds of interviews.

When we delved deeper, it became clear why. Everything about Andreas’ professional presence—his LinkedIn profile, his CV, even the language he used in interviews—reflected his operational excellence. He was unknowingly reinforcing the label of “the strategic operational guy,” the one who could solve complex operational puzzles but not necessarily lead an entire organisation from the front.

Andreas’ frustration was palpable. “I don’t understand why they don’t see it,” he said. “I know I’m ready for this role.” And he was. But his personal brand was sending a different message. The companies he spoke with couldn’t see beyond the operational box they had placed him in because that’s what his brand communicated.

This experience reminded me how many professionals, even at senior levels, make the mistake of assuming their career success will naturally translate into new opportunities. They rely on their accomplishments to speak for themselves, not realizing that without a deliberate personal branding effort, they can be limited by how others perceive them.

That’s where personal branding becomes transformative. Personal branding is no longer just about showcasing what you’ve done, it is about reframing how others see you and picture you in different roles and responsibilities and shaping your narrative to align with your aspirations.

2. Shifting Into the Branding Mindset

Personal branding for managers isn’t just about visibility; it’s about aligning how you are perceived with your leadership aspirations. Achieving this requires moving beyond outdated habits and embracing a mindset that allows your brand to evolve and reflect your readiness for higher-level roles. Here are six mindset shifts every manager needs to adopt.

From Uncertainty to Clarity

Many managers struggle to define what makes them stand out. The first shift is to gain clarity about your core values, unique skills, and leadership aspirations. This clarity allows you to craft a compelling narrative that highlights your unique value proposition, ensuring others immediately grasp what you bring to the table.

Think beyond your current role. If your goal is to lead as a CEO, what values, skills, and leadership qualities should define you in that position? Are these traits visible in your current brand?

Review your professional journey. Are you framing your achievements in a way that connects with the strategic and visionary role of a CEO? Or are you still presenting yourself as an operational leader?

CEOs are seen as drivers of change and growth. Reflect on the influence you want to have in your organization or industry. Are your current actions, decisions, and messaging reinforcing your potential to lead at that level?

From Generic to Relevant Storytelling

Stop presenting a laundry list of accomplishments and instead frame your experiences as relevant, insightful, and aligned with the needs of your next role. For example, rather than emphasizing operational success in isolation, show how it demonstrates your strategic thinking and readiness for broader leadership.

Connect your operational achievements to a broader organizational impact, showcasing your ability to think beyond immediate results and contribute to strategic priorities. This shifts the focus from execution to visionary leadership, highlighting how your actions supported long-term organizational goals and positioned the company for future success. In addition, you align your narrative with the expectations of a CEO role demonstrating that your contributions extend beyond tasks to drive meaningful, strategic outcomes.

From Sporadic Efforts to Consistent Actions

Building a strong brand requires more than occasional LinkedIn updates or a polished resume, it demands consistency. Every action, from how you communicate to the projects you highlight, should reinforce your leadership promise and credibility. Instead of sporadically posting achievements, maintain a steady presence that reflects your leadership vision by regularly sharing insights on industry trends and their connection to your strategic thinking.

Ensure your LinkedIn profile consistently mirrors your brand themes, such as visionary leadership, strategic growth, and impactful decision-making. This approach creates a clear and lasting image of you as a forward-thinking leader, avoiding a disjointed or unclear message.

In networking events or interviews, focus on accomplishments aligned with your aspirations. For example, if aiming for a CEO role, emphasize how your projects have driven organizational change, fostered innovation, or prepared the company for future growth. Tie past experiences to the leadership principles and long-term vision you bring to the table.

By consistently reinforcing these themes, you craft a cohesive narrative that strengthens your brand and helps others associate you with the leadership qualities required for top roles.

From Passive Visibility to Strategic Presence

Stepping into the spotlight can feel intimidating, but leadership is about visibility. Therefore your brand should be visible and should have a distinct voice and presence matching your career and professional aspirations.

Many senior managers hesitate to position themselves as strategic leaders, fearing judgment or accusations of overreaching. This reluctance often prevents them from showcasing the visionary qualities essential for top positions, leaving others to define their brand instead of owning the narrative.

Visibility is a defining characteristic of leadership, and a CEO role is its pinnacle. You can’t aim for such a position while avoiding its core requirement: being seen and recognized. Your brand must align with the visibility of the role you’re pursuing.

To reframe visibility as an opportunity rather than a risk, start actively sharing your insights on strategic growth and leadership transformation. Whether through meetings, interviews, or platforms like LinkedIn, shape how others perceive you by focusing on your values, long-term goals, and the broad impact you’re prepared to deliver as a CEO. Address potential concerns upfront by crafting a narrative that reflects your readiness and vision.

Scrutiny is inevitable for any leader, but calculated visibility builds trust and positions you as a confident, future-ready leader. Mistakes may happen, but handling them with integrity and transparency strengthens your brand and reinforces your potential for top leadership roles.

From Competing in Isolation to Strategic Collaboration

For higher leadership roles, personal branding must shift from highlighting individual achievements to showcasing your ability to foster strategic collaboration. Success at this level is about uniting teams, building partnerships, and driving collective results.

Focus on how your collaborations have created an impact. For example, instead of just meeting a revenue target, emphasize how you aligned cross-functional teams or worked with external partners to deliver shared success. Highlight emotional intelligence and adaptability as key traits that build trust and inspire a shared vision.

A collaborative personal brand signals that you’re not just a high performer but a leader who empowers others and drives collective growth, qualities essential for the next level.

From Static Identity to Ongoing Evolution

Your personal brand cannot afford to remain fixed, it should evolve as your skills, experiences, and goals grow. Leadership roles require adaptability, and your brand must reflect that progression.

Show how your journey has shaped your expertise and leadership style. For example, highlight how new roles, challenges, or achievements have expanded your perspective and prepared you for greater responsibilities. Consistently update your narrative to ensure it aligns with where you are heading, not just where you’ve been.

An evolving brand demonstrates that you are forward-thinking, adaptable, and ready for the demands of higher leadership roles, making you a standout candidate for growth opportunities.

3. Step Into the Spotlight

Your brand is one of the most powerful tools in your career toolbox, but its potential lies in your hands. Andreas quickly understood that if he did not take ownership of it, others would. Their perceptions—often shaped by incomplete or outdated impressions—would dictate how he was seen and, ultimately, how far he could go. This could limit his opportunities, keeping him boxed into roles that no longer align with his aspirations.

Taking control of your narrative means being intentional about how you present your skills, vision, and leadership potential. It’s about crafting a brand that reflects not only where you’ve been but where you’re heading. Your brand should inspire trust, demonstrate your readiness for greater challenges, and position you as a leader capable of making a significant impact.

Don’t leave your career trajectory to chance. Step into the spotlight with confidence, take charge of your story and ensure your brand aligns with the leader you aspire to be.
